Putting Humanity into Ending Homelessness in Denver Metro

Turning houses into homes

Because dignity is not beyond our reach

The right approach to instilling dignity in the process of becoming re-housed

Household essentials beyond the reach of our unhoused neighbors make the difference between living in a palette shed, apartment, or house and a home. An investment of a few hundred dollars in home care items can make this difference.

Our approach leverages technology to allow for choice and preference in these items while preventing logistical challenges and overspending that have traditionally come along with these types of efforts.

REALITY CHECK

Data paints a grim picture of the impacts of unhoused living.

Homelessness is deadly,

on average, those who experience homelessness die 30 years earlier than those who are housed.

During the most recent Point-In-Time count there are 9,065 people experiencing homlessness in Denver metro.

Dementia is 3X more likely if you have been unhoused, as compared to a person who has always been housed.

Our Mission + Process

On The House distributes new essential home care items and lightly used donated furniture and home furnishings at no cost to our unhoused neighbors in the process of becoming housed through government-funded housing.

To gain access to our services, clients must be referred by their caseworker, who applies on their behalf. The application gathers information about the individual’s or family’s needs and the space they are moving into, including dimensions and photos.

Once the application is received, we engage with our client and their caseworker to ensure the items supplied are needed, will fit in the space, and are the preferred version of the individual or family receiving them. We accomplish this by leveraging the efficiencies of modern shopping for household essentials. Next, we move the items to their new home and assist in setting up the items.

Designed to meet the gaps in Denver Metro’s non-profit space

There is no regional furniture bank or household goods provider for those exiting homelessness to draw from at no cost in Denver Metro. Some piecemeal efforts exist but there is no central donation collection system for these types of items specifically for the purpose of redistributing them at no cost to our neighbors becoming housed.

We address gaps unfilled by governmental and nonprofit organizations to provide a dignified reentry to sheltered life for our neighbors exiting homelessness. Providing home care items that would otherwise be beyond the reach of those moving from the streets into housing is the difference between moving into a house and a home.

She founded On The House Denver in Summer 2023 after identifying and validating that furniture and household goods for our unhoused neighbors exiting homelessness is a gap in the region’s existing non-profit landscape.
